Just before 10:30 p.m., the City of Newburgh Police Department received a “Shot Spotter” activation for the area of 9 Hasbrouck Street indicating nine rounds had been fired.

Upon arrival, officers located a man who had been shot in the lower torso. Mobile life responded and transported the man to St. Luke’s Hospital where he died of his injuries after 2 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, Newburgh Police said.

Officers were advised by witnesses on scene that the shooting had taken place from people inside of a white SUV.

Sergeant Kevin Lahar reviewed the City of Newburgh street cameras and observed a white Toyota Rav4 driving away from the area of the incident, towards Route 9W, at a high rate of speed. That vehicle description was transmitted via police radio.

Several minutes’ later Officer Hannah Lake from the Town of Newburgh, who had been monitoring the City of Newburgh police radio, observed a white Toyota Rav4 traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on route 9W and she attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The vehicle fled and a chase ensued, ultimately ending when the vehicle crashed in the area of Smith Street and Lent Street in the City of Poughkeepsie.

The four occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee on foot and were apprehended by a City of Poughkeepsie K-9 officer and members of several other surrounding law enforcement agencies.

All four were arrested and transported to City of Newburgh police headquarters.

The deceased man has been identified as City of Newburgh resident Jermaine Cooper.

Two men are facing murder charges:

Poughkeepsie resident Donnell Johnson, 24, is being charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Arlington resident Steven Williams, 29, is being charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Poughkeepsie resident Kyreem Seiman, 18, is being charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
